Camping Pegs: Securing Your Camp site

Updated: May 1, 2023

Choosing the Best Pegs for Your Camping Adventure

Most camping gear will come with a set of standard pegs for securing your tent, awning, and even some of your accessories to ensure a safe and comfortable night’s sleep without having to worry about your gear taking of throughout the night. While it may be the easiest option to role with the pegs provided, they may not always be suitable for the terrain in which you camp on. Having the right camping pegs is essential to a successful outdoor adventure. You may not know, but there are many variations and options available. That alone can make it difficult to know which ones are the best for your needs. In the comprehensive guide, we will compare the different type available. Read on to find a hot tip on which pegs will save you loads of time when setting up, so you can kick back and enjoy the great outdoors even sooner!

Beach Screw-In Pegs:

Beach screw-in pegs are a popular choice for camping on very soft ground like sand. As their name suggests, they can be easily screwed into the soft sand, providing a secure hold without the need for hammering. These pegs are typically made of lightweight materials like plastic, making them easy to carry and use. However, they may not be suitable for windy conditions and could pull out easily. If you’re in a beach setting with very soft sand I would recommend getting the pegs with the additional length, this will provide extra security when it comes to strong winds.

Drill Screw-In Pegs:

Screw-In Pegs

The BEST $20 I have ever spent! Drill screw-in pegs are designed to be used with a cordless drill, making them a quick and effortless way to secure your tent in hard ground. These pegs are ideal for campers who want to save time and effort when setting up their shelter. The only flaw is that you do require a drill, which may not be practical for all campers. In saying that though, I promise you won’t be disappointed if you go down this road. I get flashbacks on hammering in the standard pegs provided, becoming exhausted and frustrated when you can’t get them into solid ground. I stumbled across these at a local camp store and gee whizz, my next camping setup was and absolute breeze, the easiest beer I have ever earned!

Steel Pegs:

Standard steel pegs are a reliable and durable option for all types of camping. They are suitable for use in both soft and hard ground and can handle moderate winds. These pegs are strong, durable, and easy to use, making them a popular choice among campers. As mentioned above they can however require a bit of grunt and manipulation to get them in the ground. I always keep a set handy, just in case. You can’t go wrong with the basics.

Plastic Pegs:

Standard plastic pegs are a lightweight and easy-to-use option for campers. They are popular due to their low cost and ease of use, but they may not be suitable for windy conditions or hard ground as they can be prone to bending or breaking. I personal haven’t had a lot of experience with This particular peg. I’d recommend saving them for the little things that need to be secured and won’t cause havoc if it was to come loose.

Nail-In Pegs:

Nail-in pegs are a durable option for campers who are looking for a secure hold in hard, rocky terrain where other pegs may not be suitable. These pegs are easy to use and can provide a secure hold, but they can be more challenging removing from the ground. They are best used in rocky or hard terrain and are not recommended for use in soft ground or windy conditions. Zempire do a cool version of these, the heads glow in the dark so they are visible at night.

When selecting tent pegs for your camping adventure, it’s important to consider the type of camping you plan to do and the conditions you expect to encounter. Each type of peg has its own benefits and drawbacks, and the right peg for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Whether you are beach camping, mountain camping, or camping in any other type of terrain, having the right tent pegs will help ensure that your shelter stays securely in place, allowing you to have a safe and comfortable camp site.
