Essential Kitchen Camping Gear

Updated: May 1, 2023

Cooking in the great outdoors can be a challenge if you don’t have the right gear. That’s why having the right kitchen camping gear is essential to ensure that you can enjoy delicious, home-cooked meals while camping.

Here are some of the most essential pieces of kitchen camp gear that you should consider bringing on your next adventure:

Camp stove:

Coleman Camp Stove - Essential Camp Gear

A compact and lightweight camp stove is an absolute must-have for cooking while camping. Look for models that run on propane or butane, as they are easy to use and can boil water in a matter of minutes. We picked up a Coleman Hyperflame FyreKnight 2 Burner Stove. Now this stove is impressive! No wind shields required; you would struggle to dowse the flames on this beauty. easy light, gets to temp quick, its solid and easy to clean, you can check it out yourself here: Coleman Hyperflame. When choosing a camp stove, consider the size of your camping party and how often you plan on cooking, as well as how much space you have available in your camping gear. Opt for models with adjustable burners and wind screens (unless you have a Hyperflame) to ensure that you can cook with precision and efficiency.

Cooler:

A good cooler is essential for keeping food and drinks cold. Look for models with high insulation levels and a strong build, as well as ones that are easy to carry and transport. Consider a cooler with a built-in drainage system, so you can easily drain any excess water, and opt for models with locking lids added security. If you’ve got a 12v setup or other powered options you can even pick up a fridge/freezer. We manage to fit an 80L in our setup which is ample space for drinks and food for up to a week at times.

Camping cookware set:

A camping cookware set typically includes pots, pans, and utensils, which are specially designed for outdoor use. Make sure to choose a set that is made of lightweight and durable materials, such as aluminium or stainless steel, and is easy to clean. Opt for sets with non-stick coatings, as they make cleaning up a breeze, and consider sets with nested pieces to save space in your gear.

Camping table and chairs:

Zempire Kitchen, Coleman Stove, Zempire Round Table - Essential Camp Gear

A camping table and chairs provide a convenient and comfortable place to prepare and enjoy your meals. Look for models that are lightweight and easy to transport, and that have adjustable height options. Consider chairs with sturdy frames, comfortable seating, and easy to clean surfaces, and look for tables with ample storage space for cooking and eating essentials. We’ve got a bunch of gear from Zempire Camping Equipment as we find it durable, super practical, lightweight and most importunately compact, which certainly makes packing the car a breeze and the gear doesn’t take up a lot of room storing at home.

Camping lantern:

Fenix HM61R headlight - Essential Camp Gear

A camping lantern is essential for cooking and eating in the evening. Look for models with bright LED lights and long battery life, as well as ones that are waterproof and durable. Consider lanterns with adjustable brightness settings, and ones that can be used as a flashlight or a lantern.

If your more of a headlamp type of camper and prefer handsfree, one of my favourite bits of gear is the Fenix HM61R Headlamp. It’s compact, lightweight, the battery always seems to last forever, and it has 5 light modes, starting from just enough light to a staggering blind your neighbours bright. This thing can light up a field and will not disappoint. It’s also got a belt clip and magnetic base perfect for mounting to light up your site.

Fenix have a wide range of lights that will get you through the night on any camping trip. I find their head torches a must have when it comes to cooking in minimal lighting. Fenix Lighting

Cutting board:

A portable cutting board is a great way to prepare food while camping. Look for models made of durable and lightweight materials, such as bamboo or plastic, that can be easily cleaned and stored. Consider boards with non-slip surfaces, and ones that have a built-in knife holder or a hole for hanging (it’s the little thing like this that you don’t realise you need until experience the convenience).

Camping dishes and utensils:

Camping dishes and utensils should be lightweight, durable, and easy to clean. Look for sets made of plastic or stainless steel, and that are dishwasher safe. Consider sets with nested pieces to save space, and ones with silicone handles for added comfort. We picked up a decent set of stainless-steel plates, bowls and cups from Kmart. Cheap, easy to keep clean and fit for purpose.

Trash bags:

Trash bags are essential for keeping your campsite clean and free of litter. Make sure to bring enough bags to last the duration of your trip and opt for heavy-duty bags that can withstand the elements. Most camp sites you visit will require you to take your rubbish with you.

Now I’ll give you a little tip here that we had to learn the hard way… Be sure to pack away your rubbish at night or have something secure to put it in. A rubbish bag alone is not enough to keep the wildlife at night from ripping your rubbish across the campsite while you sleep.

With that said, there is plenty to consider when gathering your essential kitchen camping gear to bring along on your camping trip. Having the right tools and equipment will make cooking and your meal preparation much easier, it will also help you to enjoy delicious, nutritious food in the great outdoors. (Don’t forget the snacks!).

When packing for your trip, also be sure to consider the types of meals you plan on making. Be sure to check out our post on what food to take camping to guide you through meal preparation. This will help you to determine what items are necessary for your specific situation. Additionally, make sure to pack plenty of food and water, as well as any other supplies you may need for cooking and meal preparation, such as a cooler, ice, and a portable stove or campfire grill.

With the right camping gear for your kitchen in the great outdoors, you can enjoy a comfortable and memorable camping trip, no matter if you are camping in the mountains or at the beach. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can ensure that you have all the essentials you need to make the most of your time in the great outdoors.
